Berchard Ray Shipley, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on July 12, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on November 16, 1943.
Ray dedicated his life to service, family, and laughter. A proud Army veteran, Ray was drafted during the Vietnam War and served with distinction, ultimately achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His dedication to duty earned him the prestigious Legion of Merit, and he became a master aviator, guiding many through the skies.
An extraordinary golfer, he achieved an astonishing hole-in-one on a par 4 - a remarkable feat with odds of one in six million. His passion for golf was reflected in his many tournament victories and countless memorable rounds with friends who quickly became family. Ray graduated from Kansas State University, and his love for sports extended to fervently supporting NMSU basketball and football teams. Married for 60 wonderful years to Jean Shipley, his devotion to his family was unwavering. Home was always where the family was, and he cherished traveling with them, creating treasured memories together. With a fabulous sense of humor, Ray loved to joke, sharing his famous dad, golf, and army anecdotes that could make anyone smile. Anyone who knew Ray realized he was all in when it came to his hobbies. Golf, Skiing, Boating, Dancing, Running, Tennis, Basketball. He cultivated lifelong friendships that blossomed into familial bonds, leaving a legacy of love and laughter.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Jean Burkhart Shipley; his daughter, Wendy Shipley; his son, John Shipley, and daughter-in-law, Kathy Shipley; his granddaughter Kelly Shipley; grandson Joseph (Jack) Shipley; and his step-sister, Marge Graham. He was a proud grandfather who adored his grandchildren and cherished every moment spent with them.
Ray was preceded in death by: Raymond Shipley (Father), Jannie Ellis (Mother), Joseph Ellis (Stepfather), Randy Shipley (Brother), Wilma Robinson (Step-sister)
A celebration of his life will be held to honor the remarkable legacy he leaves behind, filled with joy, love, and laughter. Services are scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday August 1, 2026 at Getz Funeral Home Chapel with a visitation and service to follow.
