It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bruce T. Marks, a truly remarkable husband, father, grandfather, GGPop, friend, educator, and coach with a true passion for kindness and cars. Bruce passed away on April 27th, 2026. He was born to Richard and Lois Marks and the eldest of four siblings.

Bruce attended Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School where he excelled as a student and multisport athlete. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1970 from Coe College and played Semi-Pro Football for the Cedar Rapids Raiders. His pursuit for higher knowledge later led him to New Mexico State where he received his master’s degree in 1980.

Bruce’s teaching and coaching career began at Wilson Jr. High in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Upon moving to New Mexico, Bruce taught English and coached football, wrestling, and track at Gallup High School. He then returned to Las Cruces to continue his passion for teaching and coaching. After twenty-five years at Las Cruces High School, he retired and then in true “double-dipping” fashion, returned to teach and coach at Anthony HS in Texas and later at Gadsden High School. During his time as an educator, he attended over thirty graduations and had a profound impact on the lives of countless students. He was also a coach, and a part of, numerous State Championship teams and athletes. He continued his service to the community by serving for twenty-five years with the La Mesa Lion’s Club. Where he served a term as President and also assisted with program such as: Dress a Child, The eyesight conservation initiative, Gadsden High School Scholarships and the infamous enchilada dinner. He received the Melvin Jones Fellowship for Humanitarian Services in 2018.

Bruce is survived by wife of 28 years, Ann Marks, son Kevin Marks (Sandy), stepdaughters: Shannon Balok (Coye), Stacie Salazar (Jeff), grandchildren: Jordan Nihoul (Nick), Jared Marks (Sandra), Caleb Balok, Garrett Balok, Jack Salazar-Narvaez. Great Grandchildren: Mia Nihoul, Cade Nihoul, Leia Nihoul. Brothers: Terry Marks (Sue-deceased), Dennis Marks (Karen)

Services will be held at Getz Funeral Home, Las Cruces, New Mexico, 2:00 PM, Friday, May 8th. Online viewing will be available on the Getz Funeral Home Facebook page.
