Carlos Pacheco
Madrid
April 7, 1937 – April 6, 2026
Carlos Pacheco Madrid, our beloved patriarch, passed away peacefully at home on April 6, 2026, after being surrounded in his final days by many members of his family and extended family.
Carlos was born on April 7, 1937, in Chihuahua, Mexico, to Jose Angel and Gertrudis Madrid. He began farm work at a young age and all through his life remained connected to the land—passing away just days after checking on his pecan orchard in Doña Ana, New Mexico. Such was the life of our father, one defined by hard work and a deep love for the land.
Orphaned at the age of 13, he traveled north in search of opportunity, finding ranch work in southern Texas and New Mexico. He eventually settled in the beautiful Mesilla Valley with his sweetheart, Elena Santillan, where they began building a family. They later moved to the verdant Hatch Valley, where Carlos spent many years successfully running and working at Tonuco Farm. He proudly grew green and red chile for his family and for many local restaurants.
Carlos was tough as nails—a fighter with enduring strength and also a sense of humor. We remember him fondly as a storyteller of both fact and fiction, always ending his tales with a joke, laughter, and a twinkle in his eye.
After many years of working from sunrise to sunset as a farmer and provider, he retired in Las Cruces. He inspired all of us with his strong work ethic, his love of family and a simple life. In his final months, he continued to live these values, showing special care and love to Anita, one of his youngest great-grandchildren.
A life well lived---he will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty years, Elena; his son, Carlos; and his brothers, Thomas, Socorro, and Juan Madrid. He is survived by his children: Ismael (Judy) of Maricopa, Arizona; Gonzalo (Veronica) of Las Cruces, Martha Owen (Bill) of Tucson, Arizona; Leticia Ogaz of Las Cruces, and Javier (Debbie) of Albuquerque.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 20, at 6:00 p.m., followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Getz Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 21, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Genevieve Catholic Church. Pallbearers will be Matthew Madrid, Mikyle Madrid, Dante Ogaz, Dustin Owen, Dominic Owen, and Drew Owen.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, with a reception afterward at St. Genevieve Hall.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to High Desert Hospice, 101 N. Alameda, Suite 8, The Richardson Building, Las Cruces, NM 88005
