Dorothy Lopez, 85, was born July 11, 1940, in Ortiz, CO, and passed on March 31, 2026, in Las Cruces, NM. Dorothy was born to Juan Gallegos and Amada Cruz. She married John B. Lopez, Lobatos, CO. She is survived by their children: Dorothy A. Medina, (Rudy); Amadita Patsy Valdez, (Daniel); Johnny Lopez; Melvin Lopez; and Karl Lopez (Michelle). Their grandchildren Albert R. Medina, Amanda Sicre, Daniel J. Valdez, Karl J. Lopez, (Ryan), and Joseph Lopez; and great-grandchildren: Colbert Valdez, (Alessandra), Iziah Sicre, (Brianna), Amadita Sicre, Hailey Valdez and Kaitlyn Valdez; great-great grandchildren: Ivy Valdez, Colbert M. Valdez, (CJ), Isiah Horn, Sadie Horn, and Vida Ortiz. In-laws, Alonzo Lopez, Manassa, CO and Juanita-Jane, (Tomas) Cisneros, Thornton, CO. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and siblings: Armando, Maria Jesusita-Gallega Govea, (Vicente), Gilberto, (+Cora), Hilarino, (+Eloisa), Genaro, (+Rosanna), Carlos and Leonard Gallegos. In-laws, Sarah Robart, Mike Lopez, (+Orlinda), Paul Lopez, (Maria), and Gene Lopez. Dorothy was employed by Dr. Norman D. Harrison, D.O., and the Good Samaritan Health Care Center where she retired from. Dorothy, her husband and immediate family are parishioners of Santa Rosa de Lima Roman Catholic Church, LCNM. She served in the Parish Finance, Building & Fiesta Committees and was chairperson for the parish annual appeal, “United in Ministry.” Under the eligibility of her husband, a Navy veteran, Dorothy joined the Ray McCorkle Post 3242 Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary in 1967. Several times, she was elected and served as President at the local level. In 1982, she was elected VFW Ladies Auxiliary District III President. Early 1990’s she transferred to VFW Post 6917. In 1993, she was elected as State President to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary for New Mexico. She proudly represented the State of New Mexico at the National level achieving 100% in all the categories asked of the National VFW. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 10 and a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Chapter 10. Later, she organized a new D.A.V.A. Chapter 38 and became their first Commander of that Auxiliary and was an avid bingo player. Please join us at Getz Funeral Home, on Thursday, April 16, 2026, for a public viewing from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM. We also invite you to join us as we gather at her Christian funeral Mass, Friday, April 17, 2026, at 10:00 AM, at Santa Rosa de Lima Roman Catholic Church, 5035 Holsome Rd., LCNM, and her Christian Burial at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5140 W. Picacho Ave, LCNM, a reception will follow the burial. Pallbearers will be her grand and great-grandchildren, and honorary pallbearers will be her great great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to the Santa Rosa de Lima Roman Catholic Church Kitchen Remodeling Fund.
