Fernando Ricardo Melendez — known lovingly to all as Richard — passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 15, 2026, after a courageous five-year journey with dementia. He was 80 years old. 

Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Richard built a life defined by service, loyalty, and an unwavering devotion to family and community. He attended New Mexico State University, where he proudly wore the Aggie uniform, playing football under legendary coach Warren B. “Tot” Woodson during one of the program’s most celebrated eras.

That spirit of dedication carried him throughout his career. Richard went on to give 42 remarkable years to Las Cruces Public Schools, serving as an administrator and mentor to generations of students and educators. His influence shaped countless lives — not through grand gestures, but through his steady presence, his patience, and his genuine belief in the people around him.

Yet as proud as he was of his work, those who knew him best understood that his greatest joy was his family. Richard was the kind of man who made everyone feel seen and valued. He never met a stranger. Whether gathered around the dinner table, sharing a laugh with friends, or offering encouragement to a colleague, he brought warmth, humor, and grace to every room he entered.

His legacy endures in the lives he touched — as a father, grandfather, mentor, colleague, and friend.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
