It is with a heavy heart that our sister, Irene Arvizu Hernandez, 89, passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, March 2, 2026. She was the daughter of David D. Hernandez and Margarita “Mage” Arvizu Hernandez.
Irene had several talents and led a full life enjoying sewing, crocheting, knitting and singing. Yes, she loved singing. She sang with Johnny Flores, the Gonzalez Mariachis, and other groups. She loved her chile rellenos, enchiladas and viscochos.
Irene made several quilts for her brothers; and she helped mom and our sister Lily with some quilts. She even entered some of her craft in the local Southern New Mexico State Fair winning First Place. She also came in second and third and had Honorable Mention.
One of her former employers taught her how to paint and now we have an exhibit at her home, she was good. She did a lot of research on our family tree; and she also made a scrapbook of veteran’s stories as they gave her the information.
Irene was a member of the Las Cruces Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit 10 – Mesilla Valley.
She took care of her siblings, parents, and of course, her nieces and nephews. She cared for all of us and we are proud to have had her in our lives. She helped in caring for our dad, mom and our Uncle Catarino “Cate” Hernandez and our aunts Hermina “Minnie” Perez and Elisa Perez.
Her time finally came whereas the Lord called Irene to his side and willingly, she went. She always served the Lord Jesus.
She is survived by her three brothers – David (Maria) Hernandez and Jerry Hernandez all of Las Cruces; and Arnulfo “Nufie” (Mary) Hernandez of Mesa, Arizona.
Irene was preceded in death by our parents, Robert Sr. and his wife, Ida; our sister, Lillian Hernandez Trujillo; nephew, Samuel D. Hernandez.
Services for Irene will be at St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church 100 S. Espina St., on Thursday, March 12, 2026. Public viewing will commence at 9 a.m., the Rosary at 10 a.m., a Eulogy at 10:30 a.m., and Mass at 10:45 a.m. Location will be at 100 S. Espina St., Las Cruces. The Funeral Reception will take place at Our Lady of Health Parish Hall 1178 N. Mesquite St., from 12 noon.
Burial will not take place as she wishes to be cremated soon after the service. Burial will take place at a later date and she will be interred in father’s grave.
We want to thank the following who helped Irene’s health as follows: Carmen Sanchez, Caretaker, Lauri Greis, NP, and Nurses Amanda and Yvonne at Ben Archer, Memorial Medical Center, and Getz Funeral Home.
