James E. Hanna, lifelong resident of Las Cruces area, finished his earthly journey on April 21, 2025 at the age of 92. Jimmy, as he was called by family and friends, was the first born to the late Charles U. Hanna and Frances M. Mullen. As one of their five farm kids, James helped care for his sisters and grew up working on the family farm near Mesilla Park.

James attended Mesilla Park Elementary School, only a short mile walks from the farm. Then on to Las Cruces Union High School where he developed his love of art and painting. After his service in the U.S. Army in1953, he continued his art education at New Mexico A & M, now N.M.S.U.

At one point, James knew every street in the city as he was the city’s main cab driver working for Las Cruces Cab. He would wait by the city news stand and near the shoeshine stand, for the Whitfield City Bus to come through on its route.

James worked many years for Woodward Lumber Company before getting back to his roots with the City of Las Cruces Parks and Recreation Department in 1990. He loved the outdoor work, greeting people during the course of the day and was recognized by the City Council in 1997 for his commitment to public service. He retired from the city at age 80.

James was a life-long member of the Boy Scouts of America. He was an Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow member. As an adult volunteer, he received the Wood Badge beads and was awarded the Silver Beaver.

When James wasn’t working or Scouting, he was rock hunting, 4-wheeling with the Las Cruces Jeep Club, or square dancing with the local dance group. And he was very active in community service with the Las Cruces Breakfast Optimist Club until his last few years.

James is survived by his sister Laura Wright and husband Craig and Cousin Diana Youngren and husband Paul of Las Cruces; seven nieces and nephews; and 12 grand-nieces and nephews. James was predeceased by his sisters Wilma Grace, Edith Henry, and Catherine Moulder.

The Family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the caregivers, staff, and fellow residents at The Aristocrat Assisted Living Community for the loving care they provided James while living there.

A graveside service will be held at the Masonic Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025 where family and friends are invited to bid James a final farewell.
