Growing up on the farm, John realized early that he wanted to be a farmer like his father and grandfather before him. He loved being outdoors, and growing good crops brought him great satisfaction. Being the oldest brother in the family, he took on the responsibility of being a good influence on his siblings. John was a 1957 graduate of Hatch Valley High School. He earned enough credits to only attend school half days his senior year. In 1957 John was awarded the American Star Farmer award. He received it at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. The prestigious award is presented for outstanding achievement, active FFA participation, and exemplary scholastic record. In 1962 John met the love of his life, Beverly Nunn, at a dance at the old Lake Valley Schoolhouse. They were married on September 21, 1963, in Santa Rita, NM. They continued their love of dancing their entire married life. They had three children. Glenna who was born in the car on the way to the hospital, Elizabeth, who tragically drowned at the age of three, and Desiree. John loved and took great pride in his grandchildren: Grandson Jarrett Baker, who was also his loving caregiver the last 2 years, Granddaughter Elizabeth Recce, and Grandsons Christian Franzoy, and Taylor Hervol. John loved hunting, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. His favorite pastimes included playing dominoes, cooking, reading westerns, and playing or watching baseball. For family dinners, he always received requests to bring his delicious jalapeo chicken. He was a member of Our Lord of Mercy Catholic Church.
