Lane Mitchum Layer, age 65, of Las Cruces joined his heavenly Father on March 15, 2014. With his wife Marie and close friends near, Lane battled cancer for a short time and appreciated his final days with those he loved and cherished dearly. To those who knew Lane he offered love and appreciation, accompanied with life lessons and happiness all around. He enjoyed his hobbies of woodworking, listening to music, cooking, the outdoors and shooting pool. He was known to his family as a patient man and a perfectionist the same. Lane loved his four legged family members who include his dogs Cece and Jazz, and his cat George. Lane was born in Dallas, Texas to Cless and Dorna Layer and at an early age relocated to Los Angeles, California. It was in California that Lane would develop his most cherished childhood memories. He went on to serve his country honorably for 8 years in the United States Air Force. During his time with the Air Force, Lane was deployed in support of the Vietnam War for a year. Following his term in the Air Force he moved to La Luz, New Mexico and assisted with the Old Pottery Mill which he often spoke very fondly of. Lane is survived by his wife Marie, mother and father Cless and Dorna, Sister Terree (Henry), brother Wade (Sandy), Granddaughter Devon, nieces and nephews Beau, Erin, Jason, Moya, Stefanie, Chris, Zach and other family members in Minnesota. Lane was preceded in death by his stepdaughter Tina Aubin in 2005. Lane will forever be deeply missed by all his family and friends. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service to honor Lane's life and legacy is scheduled to take place on March 26, 2014 at 3:00 pm at Getz Funeral Home, 1410 E.
