Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in November 1942, Larz Gregory Oberle lived an exciting 83 years marked by years of stories, lessons, and accomplishments. He passed away on early Monday morning, January 12, 2026.
Hardworking, headstrong, and determined, Larz served 4.5 years with the United States Marine Corps through the Vietnam War before working over 40 years as a dedicated welder/pipe-fitter on steel mills, paper mills, nuclear power plants, and coal-fired plants. Larz held a special spot in his life for his time spent with NASA to learn how to work with exotic metals on projects for the Apollo mission. Even after retirement, Larz was an active and passionate member of his Union and the Wounded Warrior Project.
Larz, a lifelong athlete, always prioritized health and strength. He was the Swimming State Champion in the breakstroke at Central High School in Cincinnati, OH before going on to win several 1st place awards in the Men’s 70+ Masters’ Bodybuilding championships.
Larz is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce; his daughter, Deanna; and his two granddaughters, Shaina and Raegan. If he could leave one life lesson for anyone, he would say, “If you can find a job you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.”
In lieu of gifts of memorial services, the family asks any donations be sent to Folds of Honor or the Semper Fi & America’s Fund.
