Louis Anselmo Sauceda was born on June 26, 1955, to Anselmo and Cecilia Sauceda. He was a precious gift from the Lord, welcomed into a family that would shape his life with love, faith, and devotion.

Louis was an accomplished athlete with a lifelong passion for sports. He played both basketball and baseball for the Las Cruces High School Bulldawgs, where he was a standout athlete and a respected leader. His talent, discipline, and competitive spirit continued as he went on to proudly play basketball for the New Mexico State University Aggies, reflecting his strong work ethic and dedication.

His love for sports extended far beyond his playing years. Louis faithfully officiated basketball for 46 years and also officiated high school football, earning widespread respect for his professionalism, fairness, and integrity. Through decades of service, he left a lasting impact on athletes, coaches, and fellow officials.

Beyond athletics, Louis enjoyed a successful and dedicated career in the home mortgage industry, where he worked for 46 years. He was known for his integrity, diligence, and genuine care for the people he served, building lasting relationships and a reputation rooted in trust and excellence.

Louis also poured his heart into mentoring and coaching youth, especially his sons and grandchildren. He found great joy in teaching life lessons through sports—emphasizing character, perseverance, humility, and faith. He was an accomplished athlete and a gentle man, known for his calm presence, quiet strength, and unwavering integrity.

Above all, Louis was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He is lovingly survived by his wife and high school sweetheart, Sylvia Sauceda; his sons, Chris Sauceda, wife, Ashley, and their children, Malakai, Mikah, and Kaia; and Jason Sauceda, wife, Anjelica, and their children, Matai, Brielle, and Asa. He is also survived by his sister, Alma Cortez, her husband, David Cortez—whose selfless gift as Louis’s kidney donor was a profound act of love—and their children, Joseph Cortez and his children, Liam and Ella, and Dr. Annelies Cortez, along with many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Louis was a man of faith who trusted in the promises of the Lord. While he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing that he is now in the presence of his Savior, hearing the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” and resting in eternal peace.

A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, February 9th at 10:00 a.m. at Las Cruces First, Assemblies of God, 5605 Bataan Memorial West, Las Cruces, NM.

In honor of Louis’ love for sports and his many years of officiating, family and friends are welcome to wear their favorite sports team caps or referee gear as a tribute to his life and passion.
