She passed away peacefully in her home, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s, surrounded by her husband, Darrell, of 65+ years, and their 3 daughters. She was the best wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend anyone could ask for.
Marilyn Mott was the fourth child of five born to William Cheek and Ellen Hario Cheek on November 23, 1936, in Albuquerque, NM. The family moved to Hot Springs, NM (T or C) in 1946. She graduated from Hot Springs High in 1955 and continued her education at Tulsa, OK Business College where she was Sorority President of Gamma Chapter of Iota. Upon graduation she went to work for the American Association of Petroleum Geologists for 3 years.
Marilyn married the love of her life, Darrell Mott, a 1951 Graduate of Hot Springs High, on April 11, 1959, at the First United Methodist Church in what is now called Truth or Consequences, NM. They moved to Tularosa, NM where they started their family. Darrell was working for Civil Service as an Electronic Tech at the Holloman Air Force Base Test Track and Marilyn went to work as secretary to the President of the Alamogordo Federal Savings and Loan Association. From Tularosa they moved to Alamogordo, NM and Settled down for 32 years. In 1980, they had a home built on 5 acres and planted 55 Pecan trees.
Marilyn and Darrell were very active in the Alamogordo Elks Lodge. She was Does’ President from 1974 to 1975, and Darrell was Exalted Ruler. Marilyn was also in a Bowling League for a number of years. She was well known throughout Alamogordo with many bank customers and longtime friends. She and Darrell were members of the Travelling Elks and the Good Sams Club. They spent many weekends camping and boating at Elephant Butte Lake. Marilyn planned and organized several Hot Springs High Class Reunions. She was also an Avid Cowboy fan from their 1960 conception, organizing a Football Pool that went on among family and friends for years.
Marilyn went on to become Vice President of the savings and loan association. Darrell retired in 1988, and Marilyn retired in 1989, serving on the Board of Directors for another 10 years. They moved back to Elephant Butte Lake in 1991 to be closer to their parents. They began travelling more extensively in their motorhome, and finally covered all 50 states as well as Canada and Mexico. They also took several cruises and flew to Hawaii a number of times, which was Marilyn’s favorite place.
Marilyn was proceeded in death by her parents and older siblings, Bill, Margaret, Jack and her younger brother Jerry. She is survived by her husband, Darrell Mott, her brother, James Cheek (Freda), her three daughters, Kathi Osorio (Juan), Kelli Mott, and Kim Moates (Steve), grandchildren Brandi Lane (Cody) and Andres Osorio, and two great-grandchildren Roman and Ciara.
Marilyn enjoyed life to its fullest and was always loving and positive. She never complained and was truly loved by everyone. Her passions were family and lifelong friendships. She could always be found in front of the television drinking Coors Light Beer and rooting for the Cowboys. After 87 glorious years our angel here on earth has earned her wings and flown into the eternal arms of our loving Heavenly Father. She will be dearly missed.
