Moi carried a deep love for his roots, family, and traditions. He was raised by his grandmother, Maria Nevarez, during the war. She taught him to read, write, and do mathematics in both English and Spanish. Moi credited his grandfather Abram Tarin for teaching him all about knives, guns and working with metal. Moi particularly enjoyed exchanging gold and silver coins in Juárez. Moi was especially proud of his relationship with his grandpa and all his uncles; Tio Joe, Tio Andres, Tio Abram Jr, Tio Cruz, and Tio Sammy.

They taught him how to hunt, fish, and camp while growing up in Hatch. Moi was an only child but with Mary and Joe joining the family at a later time from another family.

Moi’s life was one of adventure and dedication. As a young man, he worked lifting hay bales for one cent each; never forgetting the value of hard work. He worked various jobs as a young man so he could attend college. He was able to get into the mechanical engineering co-op program; which allowed him to go to school half of the year, and work in his chosen field the other half. He built a career spanning 36 years at White Sands Missile Range for the DOD. He also worked closely with the German army and learned to speak German with great ease. He graduated from New Mexico State University (Which was formerly New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts) with a degree in Mechanical engineering. While attending NSMU Moi met Siegfried Linka. They became lifelong friends and shared the love of New Mexico state history. Moi later earned his master’s degree in optics at Michigan State University, which further fueled his love of travel and work across the globe.

Outside of work, Moi was an avid entrepreneur. Moi owned a bar, crafted beautiful jewelry, and was an arrowhead hunter with an extensive collection. He cherished Native American history, loved rocks, and was especially proud of his Basque heritage.
