Otila (Tillie) V. Torres, 95 of Las Cruces, NM passed away peacefully on Tuesday March 31, 2026.

She was born December 3,1930 in Derry, NM to Pablo A. Vega and Clara Benavidez Vega. She lived in Derry with her parents and siblings. The family then moved to a home in Hatch where she lived until she married Tommy Torres in 1957. Together they had a son, and moved to Albuquerque, and eventually to Las Cruces NM.

Tillie had an outgoing personality and would often say “she never met a stranger”. Her warm smile and big heart made all feel that they were in the company of a special friend. This quality helped her meet many people when she worked at K-mart as a cashier for 23 years. Later, she worked at Hermosa Heights elementary school as a teacher’s aide under the “Foster Grandparent” program as a “grandma”. Interacting with the students brought her great joy and fulfillment.

Tillie’s had many homemaking skills. Some of her favorite things to do were baking, cooking, knitting, sewing and decorating. She also enjoyed family gatherings, watching game shows, working on word search books and going on Sunday drives. She also enjoyed being outside tending to her beloved plants and flowers and spending time with her pets.

Tillie is survived by her Son Randy Torres (Linda), and many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Tommy Torres, parents, siblings: Elsie Apodaca, Hilda Gutierrez, Billy Vega.

Tillie will be deeply missed by her family and friends, and all who knew her.

The services will be held at Our Lord of Mercy Church on April 23, 2026. The Rosary at 10:00 – 10:30 AM, followed by the Mass 10:30 – 11:30 AM. The Burial is at Garden of Memories Cemetery 12:00 – 1:00 PM. A reception to follow at the Lord of Mercy Parish hall 1:00 – 3:00 PM.
