Richard C. Petrillo, age 85, went home to be with the Lord on June 7, 2026.
Richard moved to Las Cruces in 1998 following a productive and rewarding life experience in Boston coupled with a career of thirty-four years in health care administration; of which thirty-two were at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Las Cruces and New Mexico provided Richard a terrific opportunity to refocus his life. The sun, the mountains, the wide expanses and the people motivated him to become more deeply involved with his new community. He became involved in a number of volunteer activities including the Doña Ana Arts Council, prison ministry and parish council membership.
Soon after moving to New Mexico Richard was employed by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces. He worked for fifteen years at the diocese. Richard often said it was one of the most fulfilling and joyful experiences in his working career. He came to think of his fellow- employees as family. And as family, Bishop Ramírez would often remind his staff that we were expected to help and encourage our extended family of faith in southern New Mexico. This assistance was not confined to their faith; occasionally it took the form of help with a gas bill payment or assistance in resolving a parish conflict. Richard often expressed how grateful he was for the opportunities made possible by the people of Las Cruces, of the diocese and this wondrous 'Land of Enchantment', New Mexico.
A very beloved uncle and friend, Richard lived a life rooted in faith, kindness, gratefulness, and service. Richard's life was a reflection of love and devotion - his faith continues to guide and inspire all who knew him.
He loved reading, opera, the arts, hikes, writing letters, meals with friends and long conversations with his niece.
Richard was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. And grew up in Wayne, New Jersey, then a small town 23 miles from Manhattan.
Richard was predeceased by his mother, Thelma Thompson Petrillo, father, Chester C. Petrillo and brother Chester C. Petrillo, Jr.
Richard is survived by his niece, Donna J. Darata and her husband, Randall MacDonald of Pennsylvania. As well as her children, Nicole, Elise and Matthew Darata of New Jersey and cousins in Pennsylvania and New York State.
The Mass of Christian burial will be held at Holy Cross Parish, 1327 N. Miranda, Las Cruces, NM on Tuesday, June 30th at 9:00 am with Reverend Anderson officiating. Inurnment to follow immediately after the Mass at the St. Francis Columbarium located at Holy Cross Parish. His family is deeply grateful for the prayers and support received.
