Alan Barreras (Ruben) aka Newman passed away unexpectedly Sunday morning. August 3, 2025. Alan was born Tuesday April 6, 1976, at 4:41 PM in Las Cruces New Mexico.

Alan attended Alameda Elementary School, Picacho Middle School and was a proud graduate of Mayfield High School class of 1994 where he proudly played football all four years of his attendance. He was #53 his freshman year and #64 for the next 3 years.

Alan attended NMSU and became a proud member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity where he was active Alumni.

Along with meeting and having long loving lasting friendships in the Fraternity, he met and has, to this day, continued close relationships with the friends he met during his management years in the restaurant and bar industry.  Alan made a career change which took him to Santa Fe. He became ill and was forced to come back home to Las Cruces.

Alan was a lifelong member of El Calvario United Methodist Church, his faith in God, got him through several years of Dialysis and many many days in the hospital, alone, giving him time to think about the changes in his life, Alan’s faith never wavered.

In the early days of March 2025, he received that Blessing call that a kidney had become available. He received his transplant on March 16, 2025. After several weeks his body was not showing any signs of rejection. 

Alan is survived by his Mother Freda Frietze, Father Ruben B Barreras Jr. (Candi). Sisters Alyson and Ashley Barreras. His beloved Companion and Fur Baby, Bohdi Jack. He was a Proud Fun-cle to his Nephews and Nieces; Ian Christopher Astorga, Alyssa Renae Quiñones, Evan Lawrence Astorga, Sarina Meadow Astorga and Adrian Ruben Quiñones, Aunts, Sharon Gamboa, Karen Duran, Patsy Estrada, (Ronnie), Uncles, Alex Barreras (Stella) and Martin Barreras, all of Las Cruces. And Aunt Margaret Smith (Michael) of Austin TX.

Alan was a lover of life, he was compassionate, giving and caring. He was a man that had in truth, taken his own shoes off and handed them to the homeless.

He will be Greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.

He was Proud to be a Mayfield Trojan and was an avid Fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

To honor his teams, please feel free to wear a Trojan or Cowboys tee shirt or jersey to his service.

Services for Alan will be held at El Calvario United Methodist Church, 316 N Campo St (across from the US Post Office), Thursday, August 14, 2025, Public viewing 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Funeral Service will be 10:30 AM to 12 PM.
