Obituary

Santiago (Jimmy) Lopez Serna, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and beloved member of the El Paso and Rincon communities, passed away peacefully on April 20, 2026, in El Paso, Texas, at the age of 89. Born on July 25, 1936, in Rincon, New Mexico, Jimmy lived a life filled with dedication, love, and a profound appreciation for the simple joys.

Jimmy’s early days were marked by a strong work ethic and a passion for craftsmanship that would define much of his life. A steadfast member of the Laborers’ International Union Local 16 since 1957, and a proud National Guard veteran, he dedicated decades of his career to building communities. His contributions spanned from the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to various residential and commercial construction projects, masonry work, and truck driving. For 40 years, he was a valued employee at Wooten Construction, where his skill and commitment left a lasting impression. Beyond his professional achievements, Jimmy was a master of handiwork around the home—building an extension to his family house, crafting picnic tables, a shed, and even a doghouse. His resourcefulness extended to his mechanical skills, as he always preferred repairing rather than replacing, embodying a practical approach that those who knew him admired.

Jimmy’s zest for life was evident in his myriad interests and passions. He was a man who loved music and dance, moving effortlessly from Rock ‘n’ Roll to any form of Mexican music, celebrating the rhythms that enlivened his spirit. Gardening was another of his great loves; he nurtured every shoot that sprouted in his yard, becoming a master tomato and chile gardener. Outdoors, he found joy in camping and traveling, frequently visiting Las Vegas and California, where he delighted in everything from dinner theaters to the Pacific Ocean’s fresh shrimp. His competitive spirit came alive through his enthusiasm for sports, especially football, whether professional or college. He was a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan, though with a secret fondness for the Dallas Cowboys.

Jimmy’s time in Las Vegas was highlighted by his love of the casinos, particularly playing craps where his friendly rapport with pit bosses earned him numerous complimentary dinners and hotel stays. Meticulous and strategic, he kept detailed spreadsheets to track his bets on horse racing and football. At home, he enjoyed simpler pleasures watching endless black and white Westerns, savoring pinon nuts and his favorite sweets like donuts paired with a coke and butterscotch suckers. His legacy in sports extended to playing softball for many years and coaching young players, earning him the affectionate nickname “Budweiser Jimmy” in Tortugas, where he was widely respected.

Two years prior to his passing, Jimmy’s compassion shone through once more when he rescued a husky from euthanasia, naming him “His Friend Luka.” Luka remained a faithful companion, following Jimmy everywhere, a testament to the loving bond they shared.

Jimmy is survived by his devoted life partner, Isabelle Paz Pena, whom he affectionately referred to as his “Sweetie.” His surviving siblings include Jose Serna and Pete Serna, while he was predeceased by siblings Enrique Serna, Johnny Serna, Amalia Jimenez, Maggie Tinajero, Carmen York, Lydia Barela, Chavela Estrada, and Antonia Montoya. His loving children, Silvia O. Ramirez and her spouse Salvador Ramirez Jr., carry forward his legacy. He also leaves behind grandchildren Orlando Santana and his spouse Lisa Santana, and great-grandchildren Destiny Rae Santana, Diego Santana, Diego Santana (presumably a second grandchild with the same name), X-Zavier Santana, and Izaiah (Junie) Iniguez Jr. He was preceded in death by grandchild Jeremy Santana and great-grandchild Akima Rae Ramirez.

Jimmy’s life was one of steadfast commitment—to his work, his family, and his many passions. He loved life deeply, embracing its simplest pleasures and holding close those he cared for. His warmth, generosity, and spirited nature will be remembered and missed dearly by all fortunate enough to have known him. A special angel has indeed sprouted his wings, but the legacy of Santiago (Jimmy) Lopez Serna will endure in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.
