Some earthbound souls exude such deep presence and glowing spirit that one imagines they have always been here and will always be here. Sherry Doil Carter was one of those rare and luminous souls.
Born in Trinidad, Colorado, Sherry passed peacefully in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on April 13, 2026, at the age of 78. She was preceded in death by her parents, JR Doil and Betty Doil, and by her dear ones Holly Plant and James Hyde.
Sherry lived a vibrant, creative, and deeply spiritual life as a gifted artist, teacher, storyteller, native healer, shaman, entrepreneur, and beloved friend. With a dynamic 50-year career, she was a founding member of the Border Artists, built a welcoming home studio for fellow artists, owned the Mesilla gallery Adobe Horse, and partnered in the White Raven gallery in Las Cruces. An avid art collector with a flair for fashion and a passion for sharing her Native heritage through vibrant spiritual practices, Sherry touched countless lives with her compassion, kindness, wisdom, and love.
She is survived by her loving family: Nanc & Robert Christopherson, Jack & Brenda Doil, Kama, Jason & Veronica Doil, Sara & John Hyde, Tony Plant, Shannon White, Brittany Knapp, Thomas Plant, Garret Doil, Freya Hyde, and three great-great-nieces.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, May 7th, beginning at 5:00 pm at La Llorona Park, 3440 West Picacho, Las Cruces (¼ mile past Motel Blvd., off of Picacho, riverside). Finger foods and drinks are welcomed to share. Please bring a chair if needed. This gathering is a time to share memories, with love surrounding us everywhere.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sherry’s memory may be made to a local arts organization or a cause close to your heart that honors creativity and healing.
Sherry’s light continues to shine through the art she created, the stories she told, and the love she so freely gave. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
