Virginia Sponheimer, 96 died Monday, January 6, 2014 at the Heritage assisted living facility. Virginia was born on August 26, 1917 in Chateaugay, NY to Merrill O. Stone and Florence Douglas. She was married to Charles N. Sponheimer on May 15, 1946 at St. Paul's Church in Patchogue, NY with witnesses Slema Sponheimer and George K. Sponheimer attending. Virginia attended and graduated from Patchogue High School in 1937 and proceeded to Heaton Hospital in Montpelier, VT for nursing school and attended from June 1, until September 30, 1941. She continued to educate herself and went on to receive a post-graduate from New York Medical School and Hospital in New York, NY on January 31, 1943. Following her education Virginia went on to serve as a Commissioned Officer for the United States Army 2nd Service Command from February 15, 1943 until January 26, 1946 at Governor's Island, NY. She also served during World War II and was overseas for 1 year and 8 months. During her time in military service she served in station and general hospitals within the zone of interior and overseas. She handled medical, surgical, and orthopedic cases as well as general duty floor nursing. Her awards and citations include the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon, American theatre Campaign Ribbon, and World War II Victory medal. Virginia was honorably discharged from the United States Army on January 25, 1946 as a 1st Lieutenant from Fort Dix, NJ. While separated from military service she offered her dedicated service to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital as a blood bank Registered Nurse and Patchogue Medical group also as a Registered Nurse. She lived in the family farm in upstate New York until the family moved to Long Island, NY. She enjoyed quilting, crochet, crosswords and word searches during her free time and was a dedicated leader of her family. Virginia is preceded in death by her parents Merrill O. Stone and Florence Douglas, her brother Douglas Stone, and Husband Charles. She is survived by her children Carl and Terry Sponheimer. Services for Virginia are scheduled to take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens on Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 2:00 pm. PDF Printable Version
