William John “Bill” Austin, 74, passed away on May 21, 2025, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. A proud veteran, devoted family man, and steadfast friend to many, Bill’s life was marked by unwavering loyalty, quiet strength, and a deep love for those around him.
Born on September 3, 1950, in South Carolina, Bill was the son of William Stone Austin and Emily Jeannie Rogers. He grew up with a strong sense of duty and compassion—qualities that would define his life’s journey. He served honorably in the United States Army as a Specialist 4 during the Vietnam War, an experience that shaped his enduring resilience and commitment to others.
After returning from service, Bill built a life centered around family and community. He married Maria Carmen Hernandez, with whom he shared a loving partnership rooted in mutual respect and devotion. Together they raised two children: Thomas A. Austin, and David R. Austin. Bill took immense pride in being a father and later a grandfather to Theo D. Austin. His role as a husband, father, and grandfather brought him profound joy and purpose.
Bill's home was always open—a welcoming place not only for family but also for the many friends he considered his “strays,” adopted into his heart as part of his extended family. He treated everyone with equal kindness and sincerity, creating bonds that lasted a lifetime.
He cherished time spent with his sons at the shooting range and looked forward to attending football and basketball games with the entire family. These moments were more than hobbies; they were expressions of love and togetherness that defined who he was.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife Carmen; daughter Riley; sons Thomas and David; grandson Theo; sister Shirley J. Austin Hartz; and many nieces and nephews who held him dear. He was preceded in death by his parents William Stone Austin and Emily Jeannie Rogers, as well as his brother Donald Charles Austin.
