WILLIAM "Bill" HANSEN, 88, passed away Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 in Las Cruces where he had been a resident since 1962. Born August 7, 1921 in Wallace, Michigan to William C. and Helen (Kuich) Hansen, Sr., the only son and second of three children. His early journey of life with his two sisters began in a three-story farmhouse in the Greenwoods area of Michigan. He learned early the value of hard work and took pride in his accomplishments. He loved to tell a good story and had a wonderful sense of humor, always trying to make those who took care of him feel more comfortable with a joke or funny story. He lived his life with honesty and integrity; those who knew him understood his word was as good as a contract. Mr. Hansen served his country honorably with the 1503rd Air division - 60th squadron and Air Transport Command during WWII. He was proud to have served in the battles and campaigns in the South Philippines and the Western Pacific. He received his Army Air Force Silver wings, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, and Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon (2 bronze stars) during his service. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Prior to living in Las Cruces, Bill and his wife and 2 daughters resided in Alaska for several years where he ran a local business and spent his leisure time prospecting, hunting and fishing. Bill retired from El Paso Electric Company in 1988. He was an avid prospector/treasure hunter and loved exploring New Mexico. He spent his life captivated by the legends and lure of Spanish gold in the Caballo and Organ mountains and many years hiking and digging around on them. Besides being a hard worker, and a loyal and trusted friend and provider, one of his best qualities was that he was a great storyteller. Bill knew no strangers. He led a full and interesting life. The mountains and hills where he roamed prospecting and treasure hunting will receive him with open arms and those he left behind will miss him greatly. He would want to be remembered with a smile and not sadness, only fond memories of his great stories and humor. He was preceded in death by his lovely wife Lucille Grace Hansen, daughter Donna Marie Tillman, his parents William C. and Helen (Kuich) Hansen, Sr., and his sisters, Mrs. Lillian Pelon and Mrs. Bette Ebsch. He is survived by his daughter, Patrice Hansen of Las Cruces, nieces, nephews and good friends, whom he valued greatly. At Mr. Hansen's request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 at 6 PM at Getz Funeral Chapel. PDF Printable Version
