December 25, 1944 – October 27, 2025
William Vaughan Robinson was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1944, in Snyder, Texas, to Joseph Vaughan and Opal Irene Cox Robinson, both of whom preceded him in death.
William is survived by his son, Joseph Lee Robinson of San Angelo, TX; four stepsons, Rick Stoes of Las Cruces, NM, Jim Stoes (Tia) of Gilbert, AZ, Shane Umphress (Jennifer) of Las Cruces, NM, and Chance Umphress of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by six beloved grandchildren: London Stoes, Brittney Wiser, Johnathan Umphress, Alexis Umphress, McKenzie Battis, and Jaysek Umphress.
A gifted musician, William mastered several instruments—including piano, guitar, bass, and especially the pedal steel guitar, which he played professionally for over 25 years. He traveled and performed with many talented artists, including Darrell McCall, Curtis Potter, Johnny Bush, and others, leaving behind a legacy of music and friendship.
Throughout his career, William worked in electronics and sales before spending several years in automobile sales. He later joined the Texas Department of Public Safety, where he served with dedication for 25 years before retiring in 2008.
William was also a devoted ham radio operator, known by his call sign WU5S in San Angelo, Texas. He especially enjoyed CW (Morse code) and took part in Field Day events, spending countless hours in his radio room connecting with fellow operators around the world.
He shared 26 wonderful years of marriage with Janie E. Crowder Robinson, the love of his life. William and Janie first met at the age of 13 and went to school together through the 12th grade. Life eventually brought them back together, rekindling a lifelong bond that grew into a deep and enduring love they cherished every day.
William will be remembered as a talented musician, loyal friend, and devoted family man. His kindness, humor, and passion for life touched all who knew him, and his memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of his loved ones.
